Texas Leadership Scholars

The Texas Leadership Scholars program, supported by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), is a state-wide, premier leadership program aimed at keeping high achieving, low-income Texas graduates in the state to pursue their higher education. The program will support high-achieving, low-income students in their postsecondary aspirations. The program consists of connecting cohorts of participating students with peer and professional networks and mentors, support leadership development, provide opportunities for undergraduate research, and offer job skills such as resume writing, social media use, communication, and collaboration.

4 - Year Breakdown

Year 1: Each scholar lives together on campus, is provided a peer mentor(s), and attends the same US 1100 class.

Year 2: Scholars transition into a peer-mentor role for new scholars. Scholars also participate in a job shadowing experience coordinated with Career Services.

Year 3: Scholars attend two events each semester to learn and receive advice from corporate and executive leaders regarding what they are looking for in new graduates.

Year 4: Scholars are matched with an alumni mentor who is aligned with their academic or professional goals.

Students will have professional development opportunities throughout their 4-years. Those experiences include:

Developing an elevator speech

LinkedIn and other social media branding

Value of teams and businesses

Pursuing graduate school

Summer Programs

  • Annual Leadership Conference: Each summer a member institution will hold an annual leadership conference.
  • Study Abroad: Scholars can apply to participate in a TLS-specific paid study abroad experience.
  • Internship Stipends: Scholars can apply for an internship stipend if pursuing an unpaid summer internship.
